Lorne was born on October 18, 1929 in Detroit, the son of John LeRoy and Caroline Sherry. At the age of two, his family moved to Prince Edward Island, Canada where Lorne grew up. Eventually he moved to Montreal where he graduated high school, and finally back to Detroit. In 1952 Lorne married Joan and began their family until her death in 1982.

He retired in 1992 after 37 years.

He was a three time winner of the World Championship Renegade Ice Boat competition. He tried out for the Olympics as a sailor and sailed in over 25 Port Huron to Mackinaw races. He also enjoyed golf, crossword puzzles and traveling back to Prince Edward Island every summer.

He was a member of the Grosse Pointe Senior Mens Club.

In 1984 he married Mary Helen Roche. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was most comfortable on the water racing or cruising on his Cal 20 sail boat.
