Obituary

Margaret M. Callanan, age 96, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Sanctuary at Fraser Villa.

Margaret was born May 4, 1921, in Detroit, Michigan; the daughter of Mark and Edna Ward. She married George Callanan on June 18, 1943, in Portland, Oregon. He died June 7, 1990.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Mark D. Callanan; and a brother, Richard Ward.

Surviving are three children, Alan (Shane) Callanan, Carson City, Sharon (George) Movsesian, Warren; and Janice (Jim) Bauder of Bloomington; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and one sister, June Arft.

Margaret valued her Christian faith, family, fun and fruitful labor.

Her life was built on the foundation of her Christian faith. She was a member at St Peters Lutheran Church in Eastpointe and for many years taught Sunday school and pre-confirmation classes to fifth and sixth grade students. Her life reflected the character of Christ in her kindness, humility and loving difficult people well.

Nothing gave her more joy than celebrating the holidays and other special occasions with family. Her gift of hospitality set the tone for simple fun at Fourth of July picnics on Bug Island, Easter gift hunts, and Christmas gatherings with extended family. She would serve dinner on china dishes, no matter the size of the crowd, and would insist that no one help her with cleaning up the mess. We would go to bed with dirty dishes everywhere, and wake up to a clean and tidy kitchen.

For years she hosted lunch in her home with her “Bringard” friends. In earlier days her hobbies included bowling, playing cards, reupholstering furniture and painting pictures. Through the years her two son-in-laws would vie for the special title of being her favorite and she would playfully pit them against each other.

She worked in retail for many years and started her last full time job at Big Lots at age 65 and retired at age 85. She took great pride in keeping the Houseware Department neat and organized.

After living independently for many years, Margaret spent the last six years of her life under the capable and compassionate care of staff at Sanctuary at Fraser Villa.
