Obituary

Mary Rita McElmurry was born in Detroit on January 31, 1924, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Easthope. She attended St. Catherine’s school in Detroit, married Donald McElmurry, and together they raised five children in Harper Woods.

Rita was a lady of tremendous faith who was capable of touching the hearts of strangers. She had a strong will, loved to laugh, and was free with advice for all. Rita was often surrounded by her loving grandchildren, and will miss her halibut dinners with family in Windsor and the Saturday morning garage sales runs.

For the last 9 years she resided at Heritage Village - Park Place in Warren. She was an “active recruiter” for residents and known as the “Resident Matriarch.” She loved her apartment and had many friends there. The family is truly grateful for the Staff and their many kindnesses. Special thanks and gratitude to Natalie Coole, her caregiver for the last 9 months who brought joy to every moment they spent together.

Rita is survived by her loving children Patrick (Linda), Timothy (Debra), Colleen Lucido (Robert), Maureen Berndtson (Jerry), and daughter-in-law Sharron. She is the loving grandmother of Shawn, Ryan, Cailyn, Ashley, Scott, Joseph, Noah and J.T., Jennifer, Jaclyn and Jillian; great-grandmother of five, with one on the way. Sister of Thomas Easthope, sister-in-law of Betty Dehring. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Donald and her son Kevin.

Visitation for Mrs. McElmurry will take place on Tuesday from 3 until 9 pm with a Scripture Service at 7 pm at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. She will lie in state on Wednesday beginning at 11:30 am until time of Mass 12 noon at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford, Grosse Pointe Woods.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed to the Capuchins, 1820 Mt. Elliott, Detroit, MI 48207.

Thank you for teaching us all how to love unconditionally and have faith without seeing, and to know there’s a plan for us even on our hardest days. With you as our guide, we will work to make the world a better place. Rest in Peace. 93 years - Journey complete.
