Obituary

Agnes Deleersnyder passed away Tuesday evening at the Shorepointe Nursing Home on August 1st, 2017. She suffered from Parkinson’s disease for over 8 years.

Agnes was born in Lauwe, Belgium and she was right in the middle of the pack, number 8 of 14 children. She had 8 sisters and 5 brothers. She married Marcel Deleersnyder, her next door neighbor, at the church in Lauwe, Belgium on April 19, 1958. Soon after the wedding, Marcel and Agnes traveled by boat to Canada to start their lives together. They worked on a Belgian Tobacco farm together and Marcel also worked in the off season on the Canadian railroad and the gold mine for many years. Once, they realized Agnes was with child in 1964, Marcel decided it was time to make a better living for his new family and they ventured to California to find work in the gold mines, however California turned out to be too expensive to live. They thought about going back to Belgium, but on their return trip back to Canada, they saw an opportunity driving through Detroit, Michigan in the auto industry. This is where they start to plant their roots.

Rickey Marcel was born March 5, 1965 in Detroit, Michigan. Marcel was working for Chrysler automotive. They bought a house on Maxine Street, in St. Clair Shores. Soon after, Nancy Rose was born November 21, 1968 in Detroit, Michigan. Marcel found another opportunity to make more money by working at Lasalle Tool and Die company. They decided to buy a brand new house and raise their 2 children on Lange street in St. Clair Shores.

Agnes started working once the kids were in high school as a housekeeper at the Georgian East Nursing Home in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She had to learn to drive a car and speak English in order to make this a possibility.

Agnes had many hobbies. She was a seamstress in Belgium. She loved knitting and crocheting, gardening, cooking, reading books and magazines and loved listening to her favorite musicians. She also loved playing cards and hanging out with family and friends.

Agnes lost her beloved husband in August of 1999 after battling diabetes for over 10 years. She continued to work hard at the nursing home and started to manage all the family responsibilities.

Agnes decided a few years after Marcel had passed that it was time to stop working and spend more time with her 5 grandchildren, Nicholas (22 years) and Bradly (19 years) from Rickey and Renee and Jennifer (15 years), Jessica (13 years) and John (10 years) from Nancy and Don.

She started to see signs of Parkinson’s disease and it was aggressive. It caused her to have Dementia and it took her ability away to move. Agnes moved into the Shorepointe Nursing Home full-time after living with Rickey and Renee for a year. After 8 years of struggling with the disease, it finally took a toll on her very tired body on the evening of August 1st, 2017.

Funeral Monday 12 noon, A.H. Peters Funeral Home , 20705 Mack Ave. at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods, with Visitation Sunday 2:30 pm till 8:00 pm with Rosary 7 pm. Donations to Cystic Fibcrosis Foundation.
