DROUIN, Joseph Albert “Gil”, 79, of St. Clair Shores, Michigan passed away April 2, 2019.
Joseph was born in Detroit on July 1, 1939 the youngest son of the late Henry and Yvonne (Potvin) Drouin. During his youth, Gil was active in the Church receiving the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation at St. Edwards’ Church. While at St. Edwards School, Gil was president of the Knights of the Altar serving as a pastoral boy through his junior high years. Always demonstrating a dedicated work ethic, he entered the workforce by delivering groceries for Sloan’s Market while in the 8th grade. Aspiring to higher education, Gil attended boarding school for the 9th grade at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep with his brother, Larry. Shortly after school began, they decided that boarding school was not for them and returned home to attend Salesian High School for remainder of the 9th grade year. Working at Fredericks Ice Cream Parlor he met his future wife Joanne (Siska). Gil also attended St. Philip Neri School and Denby High School before joining the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. Stationed at Camp Pendleton, California he earned a GED Diploma on February 26, 1957. He was awarded the rank of Private First Class on his 18th birthday. While on leave from the service in May of 1958, he became engaged to Joanne. After release from the Marine Corps in September of 1958, he returned to work at Fredrick’s then on to Sanders as a baker while continuing his relationship with Joanne. The two were married on September 26, 1959. Gil worked at Sanders for 6 ½ years. He took a position as a machine operator at TRW in 1965. Later, Gil worked at Detroit Diesel Allison Division General Motors where he would affectionately become known for his infectious smile as “Cafeteria Joe” or “Joe Who”. Eventually he would retire after 34 years on his birthday in 1999. While working at Detroit Diesel, Gil also worked several part time jobs, most notable painting with his brother, Ray. In retirement, Gil worked as a custodian for Grosse Pointe Public Schools. Those who knew Gil, remember him for the camping days with family and friends, where his sense of humor shined - the original King Cone. When there was a room in need of painting or furniture in need of repair, Gil was there to lend a hand. He could always be found in his workroom or garage fixing and creating, making rocking horses and rocking chairs for grandchildren and great grandchildren, or picnic tables for families to gather. Proud of his family, Gil attended as many of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities as he could, always their biggest fan.

Gil and Joanne started their family of six children in 1960, whom Gil leaves to cherish his memory: Chris (Elizabeth), Craig (Traci), Cathy (Robert) Bastien, Nancy (John) Salviati, John (Lisa), Joseph (Sarah). Loving grandfather of Ryan (Kristie) Bastien, Ashlee (Joseph) Kozlinski, Jacqueline (Michael) Schocke, Samantha (Eric) Turk, Alek (Shelby), Griffin, Elena, Jacob, and Hailee. Great-grandfather of Brendan, Jorian, Addison, Madison, Tristin, Kaylee, Aubree, and Reid. Brother-in-law of Lynn Whittenburg and Lori (Herb) Kengel, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters, Lorraine and Claudette. Predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters.
