Obituary

Robert “Bob” R. Cave peacefully passed away in his sleep at the age of 92. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ethel Cave, his sister JoAnn Chalk, and his beloved wife, Mary Lou. He is survived by his children: Cyndy (Gregg) Goodwin and Mike (Debbie) Cave; grandchildren: Erica (Steve) Holland, Christin (Jeff) Leinbach, Patrick Goodwin and Hayley Cave; great-grandchildren, Grace, Ben, Ethan and Grant.

Born December 26, 1926 Bob was a late Christmas present to Joseph and Ethel (nee Bruce) Cave. He joined the U.S. Army near the end of WWII, where he honorably served with the occupation forces in Japan. After his military service, he returned to Detroit where he met his future wife, Mary Lou, at a school dance. Married in 1950, they welcomed two children into their family and celebrated more than 40 years of marriage until her passing in 1991. Family vacations each summer usually involved a road trip to some historical site such as Gettysburg, Washington D.C. or Mt. Rushmore and later to Hilton Head.

Bob was a product of the Depression-era; careful with a dollar, but a generous gift giver. He enjoyed visiting Costco with his friends for the free samples and loved his senior discounts. Bob was a real-life version of the curmudgeon in the film “Up”. Fiercely independent he insisted on staying in his home and driving his own car to the end. He had the uncanny ability to connect with everyone he encountered. By the end of a conversation with him, you had inevitably found something in common.

Bob retired from Engineered Heat Treat as a purchasing manager. In his retirement years, Bob loved to travel, play golf, spend time with his family and watch sports. Bob was not only well-loved, but filled with love for his family; his home was adorned with hundreds of photos of his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Bob’s life will be memorialized on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 11am at Resurrection Cemetery, 18201 Clinton River Rd, Clinton Twp., MI.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to VFW National Home for Children or Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit.
