Obituary

Shirley Loraine Douglas

Born in Detroit, Michigan on April 30, 1924 and resided in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan.

Shirley, 95, passed away on June 2, 2019 peacefully at home with family by her side.

Shirley was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 30, 1924. She worked at J.L. Hudson Company in downtown Detroit selling women's cosmetic compacts and was a secretary at the U.S. Rubber Company in Detroit.

Shirley met her future husband, Samuel, through a mutual friend. Celebrating their first date ringing in the new year of 1941, their courtship began. They became engaged that same year, one month before Sam was deployed for military service. Shirley then endured the long wait of three years while her beloved husband served proudly in World War II overseas. They married on July 20, 1946. Together they began a family, daughter Kimberly born in 1949 and daughter Colleen born in 1958.

Shirley was a devoted homemaker throughout her life and created beautiful, loving homes. Her passion for decorating, gardening, gourmet cooking, and entertaining continued through her life and these passions were passed on to her daughters.

Shirley always maintained an impeccable personal style as well. Even late in life she became known as a "fashionista" among her friends.

She was active on a bowling league for years and very involved with Faith Circle group at her church for 30 years.

Shirley also held a secretarial position for a time as a 30+ year member of the Daughters of the British Empire, a group she enjoyed serving and through which she formed many friendships. She loved dancing, was a voracious reader, and a New York Times crossword puzzle devotee. Shirley and Sam had a life long group of friends known as "The Gang" that never needed much of a reason to throw a party, a new toaster would do!

Later in life Shirley and Sam were able to spend winters residing in Stuart, Florida. There she enjoyed an active social life while she pursued many creative hobbies.

Still going strong at 90, she took yoga classes and at 92, with hiking poles in hand, she hiked a short trail to a waterfall within the Appalachian Mountains. At 93, a whirlwind weekend birthday celebration occurred in Chicago and she didn't miss a beat.

After leaving her long time home and starting a new chapter in her life at Lakeshore Senior Living, Shirley thrived in her new surroundings, developed new friendships, and enjoyed many activities and events.

Her husband and family were Shirley's life. The care, love, and devotion that she gave nurtured her husband and her daughters immensely. Shirley cherished her friends and the life she lived. Her family was truly blessed.

Devoted and loving wife of the late Samuel Douglas for 68 years. Beloved mother of Kimberly (Gary) Van Elst and Colleen (Robert DDS) Stevens. Cherished grandmother of Brandon (Julie) Van Elst, Darren Van Elst, Ashley Stevens, and Scott Stevens. Dear great grandmother of Austin Van Elst and Kenna Van Elst. She was predeceased by her husband Samuel, her parents George and Loraine Hodges, and her sister Jean Schrader.
