John married Beverly the love of his life and together they raised two daughters and one son in a loving home. His education included Poly Prep Day School in Brooklyn, New York and Yale University School of Engineering, New Haven, CT Class of 1955. He served his country as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force based in Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada; and a Captain in the U.S. Army National Guard based in Columbus, Ohio.
John retired in 2015 after 51 years with Corrpro Companies in Detroit, headquartered in Houston, Texas as a Corrosion Specialist. He was also a Technical Editor at Materials Performance Magazine for 15 years.
He was Past President and Fellow at NACE, International (The National Association of Corrosion Engineers), member of United States Power Squadron, Grosse Pointe, MI Power Squadron, Grosse Pointe, MI Veterans Association, National Model Rail Road Association and a Deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan.
John and Beverly grew up together at Christ Church, Bay Ridge, NY, where John’s father was the rector. They dated in college and were married by John’s father on August 10, 1958. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. As a Deacon for the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan he served the parishes of St. Philip and St. Stephens Church in Detroit, Michigan and St. Paul’s Church, Harsens Island, Michigan. He also baptized his grandchildren. His hobbies included sailing and model railroads. He was an avid reader. He was an award winning professional speaker, author and instructor for military installations, colleges and NACE International.
John is survived by his beloved wife Beverly, his dear children Susan (Troy) DeMan of Lakeland, FL; Nancy (Rick) Lecker of Poughkeepsie, NY and Frederick Fitzgerald of Granby, CT. He was the loving grandfather of Samantha, Deven, Erica, Robert, and David as well as the great-grandfather of Sophia. He is also survived by his sister Jane (Barry) Lewis of Denver, NY.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday May 12 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 20475 Sunningdale Park, Grosse Pointe Woods. The Reverend Maryjane Peck will be officiating. Additional entrance to the church parking lot off Mack between Parcells Middle School and Kroger’s.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday July 28 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 30 Church Street, Hebron, CT 06248. A reception will follow at the Fitzgerald home in Branford, CT
The family has requested memorial contributions be directed to St. Jude's Research Hospital.
