Obituary

Janet Cameron, 78, a Warren resident, passed away on Aug. 3, 2018 at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, following a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was surrounded by family, including her husband of 25 years, Robert Cameron, when she passed.

Janet May Rocheleau was born on Feb. 13, 1940, the day before Valentines’ Day, to Bernard and Mary Rocheleau. Her family includes her older sister Jean Marsh, who lives in Chesterfield Township, and her younger brother, Robert, who passed away in 2013. Her ancestors were among the first French settlers around the Detroit River region, arriving in the 1750s from Quebec.

Janet was happiest when surrounded by her children, their wives and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers, and enjoyed Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, the Ink Spots and the early Beatles. Earlier in her life, she had a wide circle of friends. She loved hosting parties, playing golf, bowling in a league, and was known for her quick wit, strong opinions and rapid-fire laughter.

Janet is survived by her husband, Robert, her sons, Thomas E. Mills (Michelle), Michael Mills (Constance Markakis) and Timothy Mills (Karole), and her sister Jean. Her nine grandchildren are Stephanie, Stacy, Sarah, Steven (Tom and Michelle), Alexandra and Georgia (Mike and Connie) and Zachary, Megan and Natalie (Tim and Karole); her six great-grandchildren are William, Ana and Matthew (Stephanie and Ryan Herdrich), Noah and Charlotte (Sarah and Ben Kitzmiller) and Nolan (Stacy and Luke Gosselin).

As a child, Janet enjoyed summers in northern Michigan with her aunt and uncle, Florence and Ernest Zahn, where she learned to ride horses and shoot a rifle. Soon after graduating in 1958 from Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores, Janet married Thomas E. Mills and raised their three sons in St. Clair Shores and Sterling Heights.

Janet worked in several administrative and bookkeeping positions through her life, including at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township and the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant in Warren.

In 1989, six years after her divorce, Robert Cameron, a high school boyfriend, sought her out and rekindled their romance. They married in 1993, dancing to “Unchained Melody” (1955) by the Righteous Brothers. They moved to Warren and remained inseparable.

The family will receive friends at St. Peter Catholic Church, 95 Market Street, Mount Clemens from 9:00 AM Monday, August 20 until the memorial mass begins at 9:30 am. Janet’s cremated remains will be inurned at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.

The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to Tobacco Free Kids, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids; 1400 I Street NW, Suite 1200; Washington, DC 20005.
