Andrew “Handy Andy” Arabia, beloved husband of Judy, loving father of Mary Kassouf (Raji), Andrea Nazelli (Christopher), proud grandfather of Olivia, Gabriel, Eugenie and Noah and brother of Rosalba Arabia passed away on September14th.

Andrew was born in Cosenza, Italy and moved to the United States in 1936. He grew up in New York City, attending St. Michael’s Elementary and Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn. He was a graduate of Queens College and New York University, finishing his PhD studies in economics. Although an engineer at heart, he worked for the General Motors Overseas Operations Group in New York, and then moved to Detroit in 1975.

Andrew was a lifelong learner and continued exercising his mind outside of his professional career. He was an avid reader, World War II history expert, and kept a running list of new vocabulary terms and topics to research in his shirt pocket. He was a patient teacher; sharing his skills and time with everyone. He also enjoyed tinkering in his basement workshop, handcrafting furniture, shelving, stools, and Barbie furniture for his daughters.

He provided in many ways for his parents and family and was a figure of stability, consistency and wisdom. He was always present, helping family bond, even in his silence or quiet ways. A Memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held on October 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church on the Lake in Grosse Pointe Farms.
