Obituary

Olive Bateman, age 99, of St. Clair Shores, devoted wife and mother, retired school bus driver, and lifelong church worker, passed away on November 2, 2019, at the Church of Christ Care Center in Clinton Township, Michigan.

Olive, known as “Ollie” to all those who knew her, was born June 22, 1920, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Charles and Annie Hands. She became a naturalized American citizen, proud of her adopted country. She wed Daniel “Ross” Bateman on July 15, 1939 and remained married over 52 years until his passing in 1992. The couple had three sons, whom they raised with constancy and unwavering love.

Ollie loved and cherished the countless people she befriended. Ollie’s love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was evident in all she did and the many lives she touched.
As a school bus driver for 27 years at Lake Shore School District, Ollie loved her job and had a truly soft heart for the special needs children she transported. She was known affectionately as “Mrs. B” and enjoyed interacting with the students and their families, especially in the latter part of her career when she drove special needs students exclusively, for whom “Mrs. B” was a special person, as were all of them to her. She retired in 1983.

A woman of great faith and integrity, Ollie was a charter member of the Northeast Church of Christ in Eastpointe. She was a tireless worker for many church causes, including being a member of the Ladies Associates of Rochester College (formerly Michigan Christian College). Ollie was an important part of fund raising efforts and helped the Ladies Associates reach a goal of one-million dollars total over the years.

Ollie had compassion for the aged and was instrumental in the work of the Church of Christ Care Center along with her husband, Ross, who served on the Board. Providentially, Ollie passed there peacefully after four years of loving care by the staff just as her husband had in 1992.

An important part of Ollie’s life were her tireless efforts in support of the Northeast Church of Christ where many long-lasting and deep friendships were formed. She used her skill as a bus driver to transport many friends in the church van to various events. In addition, Ollie also hosted many missionaries in their home.

Ollie delighted in hosting ice skating parties in her backyard where she and Ross built a lighted skating rink. Many neighborhood kids came to skate, play hockey, and enjoy the hot chocolate Ollie provided.

Ollie was an avid camper, sailor, and snowmobiler. In fact, although she and Ross knew of each other since early school age, it wasn’t until Ollie joined the “Windjammer Boat Club” that she fell in love with Ross as they worked together on the venerable skiff, “G.I. Tremble”. Ollie and Ross took their sons on many summer vacations, camping in Michigan’s wonderful state parks. The couple spent much of their retirement sailing the Great Lakes in their 29-foot sloop “Windblown”.

Ollie leaves behind her three sons Mark (Debra), Tim (Genell), and Dan (Anne) as well as three grandchildren David (Kim), Sheila (Damon), and Danny (Rachel), and four precious great-grandchildren, Molly, Kate, Abby, and Harvey, as well as countless loving family and friends, especially her dearest friend Marilyn “Muggy” Jones.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 12 noon at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road at Masonic, Warren, with Mr. Tony Coccia officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
